Coaching Supervision

According to AOCS, the Association of Coaching Supervisors, Coaching Supervision “draws on the best practice of psychotherapy and counseling supervision and places it within a coaching orientation. As such, it upholds the principles of coaching and mentoring and the coaching relationship”. The ICF Board have adopted the position of “strongly encouraging supervision”.

Coaching supervision is a relationship between two professional coaches, in which one of them has been trained to supervise the professional practice of their colleague. This type of supervision includes its own structure, methodology and theoretical framework designed to encourage and support the professional coach.

Hence a confidential and safe context is provided for the coach who is supervised to bring up their worries, achievements, challenges, ethical issues, client problems, incompetencies, fears, and ambitions as well. Everything that is related to Coaching in the work sphere.

Likewise, it involves a reflexive practice of mutual learning that includes theoretical contributions and solid ethical references. This input aims at supporting the coach with the purpose of having a favorable impact on their professional practice, and therefore, their clients.

A supervision process can include three areas described as follows:

Professional Management

This area is one of the three main pillars that is strengthened through Coaching Supervision. Professional Management deals with several aspects: the development of the Coach as an entrepreneur; Code of Ethics; agreements; contracts and the Coaching field that the Coach decides to specialize in. In other words, it is the structure of a professional practice that gets to be sustainable in the long term. As a consequence, the Coaches commit themselves to their clients as professionals through their accountability. The Coaches’ concerns might differ depending on the moment in their professional career.

Development of Competencies

In this area, support is given to the Coach as a Coach in order to develop all the competencies related not only to the ICF 11 Core Competencies but also to those ones that may bring some improvement on the quality of their work. In this context, certain topics related to what occurs during the coaching session with clients might be brought up. For instance, the issues that emerge during a coaching conversation and the professional skills to cope with them. Therefore, self-reflection is prompted over the Coach’s own practice so that they incorporate new theoretical models, and at the same time evaluate their progress. Similarly, processes of continuous education and the settlement on new practices and methodologies aim at the coach to reach their maximum potential.

Self-care

From my point of view, the grasp of our own humanity is one of the fundamental bases to be coherent and ethically responsible as professionals who accompany other human beings. As professional Coaches, we need a space of care and support in order to promote self-conscience about personal issues and how these issues can interfere in our relationships with our clients, either affecting them negatively or distorting their purposes. From this area, we accompany the Coach as a person, promoting self-care and making sure their clients and relationships system are safe.
